More than 46,000 students are registered at the four colleges and universities in Aachen, 36,000 of them are at the Rheinisch-Westfällischen Technischen Hochschule in Aachen (RWTH) and more than 10,000 at the Fachhochschule Aachen (FH) (University of Applied Sciences). Together with the Research Centre Jülich, two Frauenhofer Institutes, 1,000 engineering offices and software houses, numerous research and development departments of well-known companies as well as the Technology Centre Aachen, Aachen has a technological potential which can only be found in few places around the world.

Historical Aachen

The centre of Aachen and of the western world: the cathedral with its Carolingian – Gothic masonry. World-class exhibits show you the cathedral treasury in the nearby treasure chamber. The cathedral is opposite the historical city hall on the fundaments of the Palatinate of Charlemagne. Everywhere in the city, you run into evidence of the diligence of the citizens and the painstakingly preserved monuments and historic buildings.

Aachen as a centre for the arts

In Aachen you learn how to live art. This can be seen in the wide range of museums. Whether the “Neue Wilde“ movement, avant-garde and contemporary art or German and Dutch paintings from the late middle ages to modern times; the spectrum ranges from findings from Roman times to the middle-class home decor of the 17th and 18th centuries up to well-know collections of newspapers.
